Heritage sites in Torcross and Slapton have won funding through grants from the Government’s Coastal Revival Fund.
Following a bid by the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and South Hams District Council (SHDC) in July 2018, the team were awarded grant funding.

obelisk at Slapton. SHDC, along with the AONB, are part of the Slapton Line Partnership

The Partnership has been awarded £44,380 for the renovation of the tank memorial at Torcross. Funds will also be used to move the D Day obelisk and plinth, which commemorates Exercise Tiger, to protect it from the encroaching sea. The obelisk will be moved away from the sea which caused so much destruction to the A379 road following the Beast from the East in March 2018.
Nicky Bailey from the AONB, said: “The evacuation of South Hams villages and the D-Day practices are an important part of the area’s history. We’re delighted the grant has been awarded; it will ensure that people will be able to appreciate these memorials in years to come.”
During May, the Slapton Line Partnership and SHDC will be looking to sit down with the key stakeholders to provide more information and detailed plans.
Alan Denbigh, Chairman for the Slapton Line Partnership, said: “Colleagues in the South Devon AONB and South Hams District Council have worked with the Slapton Line Partnership to help us successfully bid for funds which will go towards preserving and enhancing two key and prominent monuments along the Slapton Line.”
