Welcome to the official website of Strete in Devon, England, which is managed by Strete Parish Council. Strete is about a fifteen minute drive from Dartmouth. It is to be found on the high coastal ground at the eastern end of Slapton Sands. It's a good place to stay if you like exploring the local beaches and is also convenient for Kingsbridge, Totnes and Salcombe. Strete is situated on the South West Coastal Footpath and, with a variety of accommodation in the village, it is an ideal location to take a break in your journey. Take time to relax and enjoy the beautiful AONB surroundings.
Today the campaign starts to raise the funds to take over the lease of our village pub, The Kings Arms.
The fundraising team is a group of volunteers who all live in the village, brought together over the past few months by a belief that a village needs a thriving pub at its heart. You can find out more about us under the Notes tab on https://www.facebook.com/kingsarmsatstrete/.
Our vision is for a community pub that offers a good quality, affordable menu, packed with tasty crowd pleasers, and local real ales. But beyond the food and drink, we hope to create a hub for village life, a space where groups meet regularly, young mothers in need of a break meet for coffee, isolated villagers come for a nice chat, curry nights are scoffed, quizzes are argued over, songs are sung, weary walkers recuperate, film nights are watched goggle eyed, grown men in fancy dress are mocked on Pirate Day, children never stop laughing on Crazy Hair Day.
To create this kind of pub, we need the community to have a feeling of being part of something special, to want to make it successful. We believe that it is important the pub is owned by the community. That is why we plan to offer shares in the pub to anyone in multiples of £250. If enough people buy shares, we can open the pub again.
A full business plan, clarifying exactly what we need, is being finalised with a consultant who has helped numerous community pubs open across the country. This will be published in the next couple of weeks. These funds will allow us to take on a 10 years lease, develop the pub and garden to make more of its potential, implement work to meet Coronavirus best practice and manage the cash flow to ensure we get through the ups and downs of the first year of trading. After the first year, we plan to be profitable.
Just as importantly though, we will need volunteers. We've spoken to a number of the growing band of community pubs around the country and volunteers are key to their long-term success. We will open the pub once we have raised the money and made improvements. We hope that this is in September but of course there are many factors to consider, not least the continuation of the easing of lockdown, so we'll make a judgment on the date at the right time.
