Welcome to the official website of Strete in Devon, England, which is managed by Strete Parish Council. Strete is about a fifteen minute drive from Dartmouth. It is to be found on the high coastal ground at the eastern end of Slapton Sands. It's a good place to stay if you like exploring the local beaches and is also convenient for Kingsbridge, Totnes and Salcombe. Strete is situated on the South West Coastal Footpath and, with a variety of accommodation in the village, it is an ideal location to take a break in your journey. Take time to relax and enjoy the beautiful AONB surroundings.
The Parish Council has been discussing complaints about speeding vehicles in the village. A number of residents and Parish Councillors have witnessed speeding incidents in the village particularly on the approach along Totnes Road. There are narrow lanes, tight turns and it's very likely pedestrians will be walking in the road where there is no room for a footpath resulting in a greater risk of collision. The Parish Council have been discussing the issue with Devon Highways to find out if anything can be done to help improve behaviour. The reduced number of journeys resulting from lockdown have caused us to conclude that the some perpetrators are local and live in the village, or are familiar with the road and drive it frequently. Despite the continued use of the 20mph electronic speed detection device near the 20mph signs at the entrance to the village, it is the case that familiarity breeds contempt, and it seems that the limit is widely ignored. This is unfortunate, because the difference in pedestrian survivability at 20mph compared with 30mph is tangible and real, and a moment’s thought by most drivers should result in compliance to the 20mph speed limit. We have reproduced, from official advice, a few words about the difference in the extent in injuries to be expected in collisions between cars and pedestrians at different speeds:-
