Heating buildings accounts for 21% of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change. The prime minister has set a target of 2035 for phasing out new carbon-emitting gas boilers, which currently heat more than three-quarters of homes. Low-carbon heat pumps, which extract warmth from the air, the ground, or water, cost between £6,000 and £18,000, depending on their type and the size of a property. The government says it will offer £5,000 subsidies from next April. "As the technology improves and costs plummet over the next decade, we expect low-carbon heating systems will become the obvious, affordable choice for consumers," says Business and Energy Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng. Heating industry figures have welcomed the move, part of a £3.9bn plan to reduce carbon emissions. The bulk will go on decarbonising public buildings, new heating systems and insulation in social housing and helping to provide clean heating networks for homes unsuitable for heat pumps.
