Welcome to the official website of Strete in Devon, England, which is managed by Strete Parish Council. Strete is about a fifteen minute drive from Dartmouth. It is to be found on the high coastal ground at the eastern end of Slapton Sands. It's a good place to stay if you like exploring the local beaches and is also convenient for Kingsbridge, Totnes and Salcombe. Strete is situated on the South West Coastal Footpath and, with a variety of accommodation in the village, it is an ideal location to take a break in your journey. Take time to relax and enjoy the beautiful AONB surroundings.
There have been a number of meetings chaired by Anthony Mangnall MP to agree a way forward to protect Slapton Line.
The following are reports that have been prepared to help everyone understand what has recently taken place to make this happen.
SLP Revised Strategy, SLP Economic Impact, SLP Vulnerability Assessment, Slapton Line Partnership Minutes - 20th October 2023
A subsequent SLP Strategy meeting was held on 3rd November which was accepted by those present.
Devon CC Highways gave an update on provisional ideas on upgrading back lanes, including an upgrade to Gara bridge.
Anthony Mangnall pointed out the Government will not allocate any money until they know exactly what it is for.
What should happen next?
It will be necessary to establish a full and thorough costing of all the work needed to protect the Line including planning application, upgrade of protection, maintenance, etc. Anthony Mangnall needs this to take to the Minister for Transport at Westminster to secure all necessary and appropriate funding.
This is likely to take some time to put together but needs to be completed sooner rather than later!!
The Adaptation Manager role should be a dedicated professional whose task should be to make this happen.
Finally, there is a need to reactivate and update SLP website so that all new information is available to everyone. Parishioners and businesses have been poorly informed to date.
